Dynamo is Dying, little old news

June 30th, 2004

Not that I’ve done any application work on the platform in the last 2 years, but the application server / web site application framework ATG that was one of my former specialities is dying. ATG had some great features that were ahead of the curve in many respects including licensing the basis of JSP page compilation to SUN for inclusion in Java.

I had mixed feelings on ATG as a platform, seeing that it was not very open and took some time for Java programmers to translate fundamental concepts from other J2EE App Servers to ATG specific packages/functionality. However, as someone who is constantly endeavoring to bring immense amounts of business value with the least amount of complexity and custom code, ATG did rather well. They had a great set of JSP-esque tags that allowed for simple forms/tables/database access/table drawing/breaking results sets. It had some quick, rapid, and somewhat flexible ways to do about 85% of what most business wanted to do on the web.

The Application Server (DAS) is going the way of the dinosaurs I say, while the company is trying to focus on it’s strengths. I haven’t used any of their new Promotions/Publishing kits. Perhaps they’re enough to provide a new future for the company. With only a few million in revenue from their actual products you gotta figure the future is not super bright.

Goodbye Old Friend!
