Thanks Sheeri and Nic for the comments.

Sheeri - I don't think it's about the best products. I've made it quite clear that the badgeware companies have great products - so do Microsoft, Oracle, etc. This has NOTHING to do with the quality of their products, projects, or competitive projects.

They are free-as-in-beer to say they are open source. OSI has no trademark on it, so they are free-as-in-beer. Open Source, to date, has been overall rather effective in self regulating. OSI has filled that need; 100k OS projects to date, and they've used OSI and it's vetting of licenses to ensure when someone says "open source" we know what that means.

So, they are welcome to do this, but my criticism and vocal attention to the issue is part of that "self regulation." ie, the market has to believe in self regulation and OSI has filled that void. I'm part of that self regulation.

Nick,

Right on man. Open Source Solutions should be just that. Open Source so if you want to take the source and do with it what you please and of course adhering to the license.

I don't see why these leaders aren't still up front in the war. They have won a few battles that's for sure, okay a lot, but the war is not over. and partnering with these "wanna bes" will just make the war last longer.

Sometimes the partnership is more like yeah we are "open" to new "sources" of innovation but when it comes down to it they'll just embrace and extend then SHUN b/c they have gotten want they want the "gold" of open source innovation.

Keep the force flowing,

To me it simply seems like free-as-in-speech (and free-as-in-market) style thinking. Let anyone who wants to try, and whoever has the best products will shine.
