{"id":899,"date":"2004-06-25T07:53:40","date_gmt":"2004-06-25T14:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nicholasgoodman.com\/bt\/blog\/?p=5"},"modified":"2004-06-25T07:53:40","modified_gmt":"2004-06-25T14:53:40","slug":"distributed-database-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.nicholasgoodman.com\/bt\/blog\/2004\/06\/25\/distributed-database-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Distributed Database Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"dds_cover\" src=\"\/entry_images\/dds_cover.jpg\" width=\"121\" height=\"169\" border=\"0\" \/>I am currently making my way through the book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0136597076\/qid=1088175053\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14\/002-7396486-0605625?v=glance&amp;s=books&amp;n=507846\">&#8220;Principles of Distributed Database Systems.&#8221;<\/a>  It reads like an academic course textbook, as I imagine was the authors intent.<\/p>\n<p>I find it fascinating&#8230; It is also a bit challenging to try and <em>remember<\/em> what it&#8217;s like to be learning new notations and abstracted academic concepts.  My day to day is so grounded in building customer solutions (very practical, with good applied technique and concepts) that I have to be deliberate to keep the mind sharp.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that I&#8217;m particularly enjoying about this book is that I am seeing some of the concepts that I use my role as a BI Consultant from their starting points.  I&#8217;m accustomed to interpreting Oracle plans, statistics, etc and now I&#8217;m able to relate that to the abstract concepts they represent.<\/p>\n<p>I have to admit though, my interest does have a particular project in mind&#8230;  I&#8217;m always wanting to build something that is more clever, and better than what&#8217;s out there now&#8230; This book might help me solidify some of those thoughts and add direction to my company R&amp;D focus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am currently making my way through the book, &#8220;Principles of Distributed Database Systems.&#8221; It reads like an academic course textbook, as I imagine was the authors intent.
